Caroline Ellanora Swihart (John J7, Peter6 Swinehart, Peter5, Gabriel4, Johann George3 Schweinhardt, Hans Gabriel2, Conrad1) was born Jul 19, 1862 in Indiana, and died Apr 15, 1916 in Altamont Kansas. She married (1) William H Rader. He was born May 1862 in Illinois. She married (2) David Allen Lee Jun 26, 1879 in Labette County Kansas, son of John Lee and Rebecca Nichaels. He was born Jun 27, 1836 in Illinois, and died Dec 07, 1903 in Leavenworth Kansas.

Researcher note:

According to descendants of Caroline she was the only survivor of a French wagon train that was massacred by Indians. The Swihart’s were crossing the prairie, saw the smoke and went to investigate. They heard a child crying and discovered Caroline in the prairie grass. They took Caroline in to raise as their own. They searched for the starting point of the wagon train, trying to find family, but they could only affirm it was of French origin. When Caroline was eleven she was given a choice as to what name to keep and she said the Swihart's were her family and she would always be theirs. This story was related by Beulah Hackney Allen Gibson, daughter of Arminda May Lee and Benjamin Hackney.

Information for Caroline was provided by Janice Ciarla Longstreath, great great granddaughter of Caroline. The dates of birth for the children of John and Mary were taken from a copy of Mary’s family bible.
